Hydrasynth evolving pad sound design
Big evolving pad is exactly what this engine wants to do. Stack the WaveScan oscillators, run the filters, then let LFOs and envelopes crawl through the Mod Matrix so nothing sits still.
Steps
- Start clean and pick a moving waveformPress [INIT] twice for a blank patch, then go to [OSC 1] and choose a WaveScan-capable waveform. The WavScan parameter (CC 24 for OSC1, CC 26 for OSC2) is what you'll sweep to morph the timbre.
- Fatten it with WavStack or a second oscillatorOn OSC 1 set the WavStack mode to layer five detuned copies for instant width from one oscillator, or bring in OSC 2 with its own WavScan and Detune (CC 95) for beating. Spread it with StereoWidth on [VOICE] page 1 to make it huge.
- Set slow amp and filter shapesENV 2 is pre-wired to the Amp and ENV 1 to the Filters. Give ENV 2 a long Attack and Release (ENV2 Attack CC 85, Release CC 88) so the pad swells and tails. Open Filter 1 partway (Cutoff CC 74) so there's room to modulate it.
- Modulate WaveScan for the evolving coreHold [LFO 3], press the OSC 1 WavScan Control button, release both. That drops LFO3 into the first open Mod slot targeting WavScan. Set a small amount on the lower Control knob and run LFO3 slow (LFO3 Rate CC 76) so the wavetable drifts.
- Layer a second slow mover on the filterSame shortcut: hold [LFO 1], tap the Filter 1 Cutoff Control button, release. Use a different rate (LFO1 Rate CC 72) than the WaveScan LFO so the two motions phase against each other and never repeat cleanly.
- Add depth with the delay and reverbPush Reverb Time (CC 65) up and set Reverb Dry/Wet (CC 91) generous, then a longer Delay Time (CC 15) with some Feedback (CC 14) to smear the tail. This glues the moving layers into one wash.
Ideas to try
Cross-mod the LFO rates for organic drift — In the Mod Matrix, route one LFO to modulate another LFO's rate. When the modulating LFO speeds up and slows the other, the pad's motion breathes instead of ticking like a metronome. Envelope segments can also be lengthened or shortened by LFOs, so you can make the swell time itself wander.
PW-ASM as a hidden FM texture — Set OSC 1 to a sine and put MUTANT 1 in PW-ASM mode, Depth 128, Dry/Wet 100%. Draw your own modulator by setting the 8 Warp points into a slope or jagged shape, then modulate Mutant1 Depth (CC 30) with a slow LFO. You get metallic FM harmonics that evolve underneath the pad.
Loop the envelope for endless motion — The ADSR envelopes are loopable with Curve and BPM per segment. Set a spare envelope to loop slowly and route it to WavScan or filter cutoff. Now the pad keeps moving even on a held chord with no LFO retrigger.
Macro one knob to rule the movement — Assign Filter Cutoff, WavScan, and StereoWidth all to a single Macro (Macros are CC 16-23). One knob or one CC opens the whole pad up from small and dark to wide and bright, which makes it playable and automatable from a DAW.
