Mother-32 patchbay tour and self-patch

The Mother-32's 32-point patchbay is where the fun lives: 18 inputs, 14 outputs, all normalled internally so it makes sound untouched but opens up the second you start plugging into itself. Here's the tour plus a patch that plays and evolves on its own.

Steps

  1. Read the panel: reversed labels are outputs, standard text are inputsPatch points whose labels are written normally are inputs; reversed/mirrored labels are outputs. Circled points are gate inputs. Only one output into any given input to avoid over-voltage; splitting an output with a mult or y-cable is fine.
  2. Know your sound outputsVCO SAW OUT and VCO PULSE OUT are the raw oscillator, NOISE OUT is white noise, VCF OUT is post-filter, VCA OUT is post-amp, and AUDIO OUT is the final 1/4" output.
  3. Know your modulation and control outputsLFO TRI and LFO SQ are the two LFO waveforms, EG OUT is the envelope (0 to +7.5V), KB OUT is pitch CV (-5 to +5V), GATE OUT is the +5V gate, and ASSIGN OUT is switchable in Setup mode (defaults to Sequencer Clock).
  4. Know the key CV inputs for self-patchingVCF CUTOFF, VCF RESONANCE, VCO 1V/OCT, VCO LIN FM, VCO MOD, LFO RATE, VCA CV, MIX 1/MIX 2, and the gate inputs GATE IN, HOLD, RESET, RUN/STOP, TEMPO. These are where you send outputs to make it move.
  5. Build the self-playing patchRun the sequencer, then patch LFO TRI into VCF CUTOFF for slow filter sweeps, and KB OUT into LFO RATE so the LFO speeds up on higher notes. Optionally patch LFO SQ into VCO MOD for pitch wiggle. Everything comes from the M32's own jacks.

Ideas to try

Pitch-tracking LFO wobble — Patch KB OUT into LFO RATE. Now the LFO speeds up as you play higher, slows down lower. Route that same LFO (TRI) into VCF CUTOFF and the filter movement follows the melody. Feels alive without you touching anything.

Noise as a modulator, not just a sound — Take NOISE OUT into MIX 1 IN, or into VCO MOD, for random-ish crackle and drift. Blend a little into the filter or pitch path for an unstable, analog-breathing texture on top of the sequence.

Self-clocking chaos loop — Set ASSIGN OUT to a Sequencer Step trigger or clock division in Setup mode Page 1, then feed it back into RESET or RUN/STOP for stutters and retriggers. Slightly unpredictable, endlessly listenable.

EG into VCA for plucks that shape themselves — With the sequencer running, patch EG OUT into VCA CV (set VCA MODE appropriately) and use the envelope to carve dynamics per step, then send LFO SQ into VCA CV instead for gated tremolo stabs.
